I Don T Get Abstract Art

Of course when non abstract art such as conceptual artist damien hirsts the golden calf a pickled calf with gold horns and hooves sells for 103 million it can all get confusing but thats okaytry not to think about it and just blame abstract art. The intrinsic concept of abstract art is that it does not have a physical subject or obvious meaning. The subject matter is what gives traditional painting its structure and compositional organization.

Artists should never bash each other and no art should ever be called bad.

I don t get abstract art. Abstract art can also make people uneasy because they dont automatically know what the art is about just by a cursory glance. I dont know how the art teacher actually felt but i cant remember a single purely abstract work and even representational modern work didnt get much coverage. Abstract art doesnt contain recognizeable objects so there is nothing to grasp or hold onto. Al forms of art should be celebrated for adding beauty to the world.

I think we did see some of picassos earlier work say the 1905 boy in blue. Do you look at abstract art and go huh i just dont get it i never used to get abstract art i would look at it thinking it was just a bit of paint slapped on a canvas and pass by all too quickly i was a realism girl and i still am to some degree. Just because some of the patrons of abstract art buy it to try to appear like they are sophisticated but dont get it doesnt mean the art itself is bad. Or folks will say i just dont get abstract painting my typical response is that abstract painting is just like any other type of painting it just has the subject matter removed.

Consider the experience of a bank manager who every day walked out of her office to see an abstract impressionism painting. You dont have to have access to fancy art supplies to get started making an abstract sculpture. You can twist it into long snakes roll it into smooth compact spheres or leave it half crumpled for an interesting look. Or they assume that because it doesnt look like anything then it is not about anything.

Take a step out of the physical world that we live in and understand that the subject of the painting is no longer an object or a person but perhaps color composition shapes or a non concrete concept. As i have matured as an artist and an observer of art i now get and love abstract art and ofcourse i also create it. Often people will say they just do not get the abstract quality of some art. Crumpled aluminum foil has an eye catching texture and a shiny glint.

3 abstract art is commercialyou can buy and sell abstract art unlike say a thought and the taint of money is ugly. It looks like nothing more that a bunch of paint splashed on a canvas.
